1. Overview
Whiskovery is a local-first personal whisky journal. An account is not required: bottles, tastings, photos, and other core journal features continue to work locally and offline. You may optionally use Sign in with Apple on iPhone or Sign in with Google on Android and choose to back up journal records to a private cloud backup.
2. Information stored on your device
Whiskovery stores the following information locally on your device:
- Bottle, Whisky, Tasting, purchase, and Buy List records in SQLite
- Notes and other content you write
- Bottle photos you choose, saved in app-local storage
- Language, base currency, drafts, and other app settings
- Cached foreign-exchange rate data and app-managed backup files
Your local database remains the live source of truth. Signing in, signing out, a failed network request, or deleting a cloud account does not delete your local journal.
3. Optional account and cloud backup
If you choose Sign in with Apple on iPhone or Sign in with Google on Android, Firebase Authentication (operated by Google for Whiskovery) processes the selected provider's user identifier and your email address when it is provided. An Apple email may be a private-relay address. No account is required for normal use, and Whiskovery does not silently link Apple and Google accounts by email.
Cloud backup happens only after you tap Back Up Now. Whiskovery then stores a private, account-linked copy of journal records in Google Cloud Firestore, including Bottle and Whisky data, purchase details, Tastings and free-form notes, Buy List records, and saved coordinates. Bottle photos are not uploaded and remain only on the device. Whiskovery keeps the newest three committed cloud backup versions per account.
Cloud restore validates the backup first, creates a local safety backup when needed, and adds only missing records; it does not overwrite existing local records. A restored record that referred to a local photo may appear without that photo on another device.
4. Local export and import
You can export a JSON backup to a destination you choose. Exported backups contain journal records but not photos. Import validates the file, creates a local safety backup when needed, and adds only missing records without deleting or changing existing records. Copies saved or shared outside Whiskovery remain under your control at the selected destination.
5. Optional location information
Location permission is optional. When you explicitly request a place suggestion, coordinates may be processed by the operating system's geocoding service under the platform provider's terms. Whiskovery does not operate a location server. If you save coordinates in a journal record and later choose cloud backup, those coordinates are included in that private backup.
6. Historical currency conversion
Whiskovery requests historical European Central Bank reference-rate data from Frankfurter. The request includes the requested date and source/target currency codes, plus ordinary network metadata. It does not include a purchase amount, shop, Bottle or Tasting data, notes, photos, location, or a Whiskovery user identifier.
7. Optional on-device tasting-note draft
After you explicitly tap Draft from tasting details, supported Apple devices may use Apple's on-device Foundation Models to create a preview from selected structured tasting details. Whiskovery does not send your free-form note, photo, location, prices, account identifier, or database to a Whiskovery or third-party cloud AI service. If the on-device model is unavailable, Whiskovery uses a deterministic offline fallback. A draft changes your note only after you explicitly choose Replace note.
8. Advertising, analytics, and diagnostics
Whiskovery contains no advertising and performs no behavioral tracking. The production app does not use Firebase Analytics, Firebase Storage, Crashlytics, an advertising SDK, or a remote AI provider.
9. Data deletion
You can delete supported individual records in the app. Delete Local Device Data removes app-managed records, photos, drafts, preferences, and local backup files from that device; it does not delete a cloud account. Delete Cloud Account deletes the Firebase account and its cloud backups and requests revocation of the Apple or Google sign-in connection; it keeps local device data. If you cannot access the app, use the account-deletion request instructions. Copies you exported outside Whiskovery must be deleted at the destination where you saved them. Uninstalling the app generally removes app-local data, subject to operating-system backup behavior.
10. Service providers and platform services
Optional cloud account and backup use Apple Sign in with Apple on iPhone, Google Sign-In on Android, and Google Firebase Authentication/Cloud Firestore. Optional currency lookup uses Frankfurter. Optional place suggestions use platform geocoding. App distribution and operating-system backup or diagnostics may be handled separately by Apple or Google under their terms and settings.
Depending on where you use the app and where these providers operate their infrastructure, information processed by Apple, Google Firebase, Frankfurter, or platform services may be processed in countries other than your country of residence, subject to each provider's terms and applicable safeguards.
11. Children
Whiskovery concerns whisky and is not designed for or marketed to children.
